⚠️ Why Student Loans Can Wreck Your Credit Overnight (Read This Carefully)

Micah Abigail's Desk

I want to share something that just happened with one of our clients — because this is something EVERYONE needs to understand.

A client called us concerned. She had been receiving notices in the mail saying she was 30 days late… then 60 days late… on her federal student loans.

But when she checked her credit report?

No late payments were showing.

She was confused.

Here’s what most people don’t know:

Federal student loans typically do NOT report 30-day or 60-day late payments.

They report when you hit 90 days late.

And when that happens, the damage is severe.

By the time it hits your credit report, it’s not a small ding — it’s a major derogatory event.

Worse?

Student loans often report by disbursement or semester. That means one missed obligation doesn’t always equal one late payment.

We’ve seen situations where a single issue resulted in 10, 20, even 30 late payments reporting at once.

That’s not a small score drop. That can be devastating.

The good news in this case?

We caught it in time. I told her to hang up with me immediately and call her loan servicer. She was able to address it before it hit 90 days.

A few more weeks, and this would have been a completely different conversation.

Here’s the takeaway:

If you are receiving late notices on a student loan — even if your credit report still looks clean — do not ignore it.

Act immediately.

And please share this with your friends, family, and colleagues. Most people have no idea how student loan reporting actually works.

If you’ve already had late payments report on an active student loan, we can evaluate your situation. However, I want to be transparent:

Removing late payments on an open and active tradeline is one of the most difficult challenges in credit reporting.

Every case is unique, and we will always review the facts before giving guidance.

But prevention is far easier than correction.

Know where your student loans stand.

Open your mail.

Monitor your accounts.

And act quickly.
